China: "Is that a woman lying in the street?"

2/14/09: I was riding my scooter home one day when I saw something in Beijing Lu, the busiest street in Kunming. "Is that a woman lying in the street?" After a closer look, I saw a woman in her late teens/early twenties laying by the center divider of a very busy street. I thought it was strange that no one stopped to help her or see what was wrong. Well, I parked my scooter, waited until the traffic cleared and ran across 3 lanes of traffic.

When I met her, she was crying hysterically. Now, I don't speak any Chinese, so I couldn't talk to her at all. I didn't know what happened to her or why she was weeping uncontrollably. I motioned for her to get out of the street and she refused. I held out both of my hands and she grabbed them as I helped her to her feet. She clung to me like I was a long lost friend. I then realized she was very drunk and had vomited all over herself. I helped her to the sidewalk where she fell in the grass as onlookers gawked. People watched, wondering if I was the one who had hurt her.

Someone then called the police who came with the "patty wagon" about 5 minutes later. She refused to go with them or even to get up from the ground. I again held out my hands and she again grabbed them and let me lift her up. The police tried to get her into the patty wagon but she started screaming and held on to me, clinging for dear life, still crying profusely. I held her one last time and assisted her into the wagon, talking gently to her, calming her down. God used me to save another life.
