China: Culture Shock

11/15/08: During the first 6 months I was in China I’ve had several encounters with the culture that have been “unpleasant” for me:

1) Someone deliberately kicked in the whole front end of my e-bike while it was parked,
2) Someone broke the lock on my scooter (damaging the steering) and moved it into the street and traffic
3) A man socked me with his fist 5 times in the face, 4) I was robbed twice in one week,
5) The security guard lowered the gate on my head (accident),
6) A man riding an e-bike behind me chased after me with a crow bar,
7) my wallet was stolen 5 times
8) Someone stole my motorbike,
9) someone tried to steal my bicycle while I was riding it.

Most of these things happened within 20 feet of a police officer.
After about 6 months of this, I hated China and I hated Chinese people (very bad since I was a missionary in China). I finally got smart and asked God why all these things were happening to me (they weren't happening to any other foreigners). God told me He is answering my prayer. When I was in Korea, I prayed every day that God would teach me to love. I told Him I cannot even call myself a Christian unless I love others.

God put me in a country of 1.3 billion people and then picked the worst people he could find to cross my path and hurt me somehow. "OK, now forgive them. Love them." "You didn't get it. Let's try again. (Incident with someone else) Forgive them. Love them. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat until I finally got it right. (I think I am in God's special ed class!)
