Uganda: 17 people saved with bubble gum

5/17/1996?: On my way to the village I was on the boat to the island with 13 other passengers and 3 crewmen. The boats used for ferrys are hallowed out wooden vessels. They all have holes and come with bailing buckets. As the men were bailing water on this particular trip, I noticed the water coming in much faster than usual and I calculated that we would not make it to the other shore. I also noticed worried looks on the other passengers. I realized that since most Ugandans have two big fears (dogs and water), I was probably the only one in the boat other than the crew that could swim. If the boat went down we would all die.

It was then I remembered  that some visiting short term missionaries gave me a pack of gum the day before. I normally don't chew gum but accepted it and put it in my pocket. I took out two pieces, chewed them up until they were very soft and stuck them into the hole near me. This plugged the hole near me and stopped the water. Everyone clapped. God led the visitors to give me the gum. God led me to accept it. God gave me the idea. God saved 17 people that day from drowning with two sticks of Big Red bubble gum.
