Rwanda: The Home Invasion
4/9/1995-Rwanda: PALM SUNDAY—Today is the one year anniversary of the beginning of the genocide in Rwanda. the U.N. told everyone to stay inside and lock their doors because they were expecting more violence.
We locked our doors but one of our workers went outside for a minute. When she did, 3 men came into our house with a pistol, machete, and a knife. They made us lay on the floor for 2 ½ hours while they took our workers out one by one demanding to know where our money was.
They took me out of the room, held a knife to my throat, body searched me twice, and argued whether they should kill us then or wait until after they robbed us. The man with the gun took me out of the room again, pointed a gun in my face and said, “Give me dollars or I shoot you right now.” I told them they took all my money. They wanted more. I told them I had no more.
During the entire ordeal, I had deep down peace although I was scared on the outside. I was convinced I would be cut up to pieces by the machete. I cried out to Jesus over and over.
[Note: We later learned that a pastor of a church in Orange County which was having a Palm Sunday service during the time we were robbed, stopped the service and had everyone pray for us. At that exact time, the robbers threw blankets over us. We were told the next day by the UN that when they did that they decided not to kill us. they left our home, went to an orphanage and killed 5 people.] My life was spared because a pastor on the other side of the world stopped his church to pray for us.
