East Los Angeles: How God called me to be a teacher

9/7/1978: I just graduated from university. I had no idea what God's will was for me. I had to make a choice.

1) My parents were moving. I could move with them. (I was still living at "home" and our relationship was still poor)
2) I could move out on my own, get a job to support myself and work on a master's degree. (The new term was starting the next day and I wasn't even registered for school)

3) I could go to the mission field.
As I lay on the sofa I prayed "God, I need to know your will for my life and I need to know in the next 24 hours." Right after I said "Amen" the phone rang. It was a principal of a Christian school in East Los Angeles. He said he needed a first grade teacher and would I be interested in teaching? The spirit of God bore witness in my heart and I went to LA to meet him. I was hired and taught there for 8 years.

I saw many students come to Christ and many decisions to follow Him. Some kids came from hard families whose mothers were prostitutes and fathers were drug dealers. I daily learned to trust God for wisdom is meeting their needs. When I asked how he got my name, he showed me a printout that was about 20 feet long and had about 200 names of certified, experienced teachers. God led him to call my name first (I had no certificate, no experience, little Spanish).
